The Wedjat

The eye of Horus has six parts.

Ancient Egyptian scribes used the six parts of the Wedjat as fractions when measuring grain — a halving sequence: a half, a quarter, an eighth. Each part also stood for one of the senses. We build a cup out of the same six.

The six fractions add up to 63/64. Thoth was said to supply the missing sixty-fourth — no measure ever closes on its own.

  1. 1/2

    Smell

What fills the room the second the grinder turns. We grind every morning and never hold it over.

  2. 1/4

    Sight

The layers in the cup. That short moment before espresso, milk and syrup give in to each other.

  3. 1/8

    Thought

Which brew, which bean, which grind. That decision happens behind the counter, every single time.

  4. 1/16

    Hearing

The portafilter locking in, the steam wand hissing, ice hitting the cup. The shop keeps its own time.

  5. 1/32

    Taste

The first sip. Everything else exists to serve it.

  6. 1/64

    Touch

Warm card or a cold cup beading with condensation. Coffee is felt before it is drunk.

  • The Name

    Why Horus?

Horus is the falcon-headed legend of the sky, and his eye stands for protection and wholeness. We took the name because a single cup is worth protecting too.
